WVU State Fire Training Academy
Located near WVU Jackson’s Mill in Weston, W.Va., WVU Fire Service Extension trains more than 2,000 firefighters and first-responders every year from West Virginia and surrounding states.
The 20,000 square foot State Fire Training Academy is ground zero for some of the most up-to-date fire and rescue training in the region. The facility, which opened in June 2008, is also the new home for the high-tech Mobile Aircraft Rescue Firefighting Unit and the Mobile Fire Training Unit.
Special Training Equipment
Mobile Structural Fire Trainer
The 53-foot Mobile Structural Fire Trainer provides real-life fire training, challenging participants with smoke, flames, sights, sounds and obstacles of commercial and residential structural fires. The safe system is controlled from an observation room by a lead instructor who can shut down the operations and ventilate the unit’s interior within 60 to 90 seconds.Mobile Aircraft Fire Trainer
This Symtron A-30000 Firetrainer simulator is utilized throughout the state and region to assist local airport emergency services in meeting 14 CFR Part 139, Certification of Airports requirements. Local airport emergency services, local fire departments, and law enforcement are able to join in this valuable training without leaving their respective areas or at the academy. National Recognition
National Fire Academy
Fire Service Extension is the state agency for course offerings through the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Md.
National Board of Fire Service Professional Qualifications
WVU Fire Service Extension serves as the entity responsible for conducting certification through the National Board of Fire Service Professional Qualifications in the State of West Virginia. Certification from a nationally accredited entity is a statement of success, an indisputable mark of performance belonging to individual fire service professionals.
Junior Fire Fighter Camp
This annual camp attracts youths from throughout West Virginia, as well as Maine, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Virginia. Campers participate in a variety of classroom and practical training scenarios including personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus; first aid and CPR; vehicle fires; forcible entry; aerial and ground ladders; and airport rescue fire fighting.
