The West Virginia Afterschool project supports children and families during the after school hours. The focus of the project is to improve afterschool programs which serve at-risk audiences through enhancing educational curriculum, developing linkages to support families, and providing technical assistance and training for afterschool staff development.

Specifically, the program is targeting school-age high-risk youth who are in danger of dropping out of school, academically challenged, prone to criminal or delinquent behaviors, and may lack strong positive role models in their lives.

While the nine sites selected in Cabell, Kanawha and Mercer counties have their own unique characteristics, the common thread is poverty. Coming from an impoverished environment is one of the greatest rumblestripping factors that impedes academic success.
