Welcome

The West Virginia University Extension Service and the West Virginia Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences invite you to Bridging the Gap with Education: Diabetes Symposium and Workshop. This special conference is intended for health educators and clinicians working in the field of diabetes. This conference will explore the challenges and opportunities associated with providing education and support to individuals with diabetes and their families.

Learning Objectives

Participants should be able to:

  • Identify the standards for outcome measurement of diabetes self-management education.
  • Discuss the latest strategies for preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes.
  • Recognize the role of dietary practices and exercise activity in controlling blood glucose levels.
  • Describe the physiological defects associated with diabetes.
  • Discuss the latest strategies in pharmacotherapy of type 2 diabetes.
  • Discuss therapy for diabetesrelated complications and co-morbidities, including colorectal cancer.
  • Recognize the relationship between diabetes and CVD.
  • Understand the requirements for quality vision and eye care for individuals with diabetes.
  • Understand the management of risk factors related to diabetes in children.
