Fire Fast Facts
October 7, 2009
Are you prepared for a home fire? Find out by reviewing the fire safety fast facts from West Virginia University Extension Service and the National Fire Protection Association.
- Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires.
- More home candle fires occur on Thanksgiving day than on any other day.
- Don’t use flour to put out a kitchen fire. Flour can act as a combustible agent and cause the fire to spread. Instead, keep a kitchen fire extinguisher beside the stove. If an extinguisher isn’t available, you can use baking soda. However, in every fire situation you should contact the fire department.
- Overcrowded electrical outlets are the third leading cause of home fires.
- During the winter months, portable space heaters are a significant cause of home fires.
