Located 35 miles west of Pittsburgh, Pa., Hancock County is the northern-most county in West Virginia. Though its 88.55 square miles ranks it as the smallest county in the state, Hancock County is one of West Virginia's most populated regions. With a population of 35,233, Hancock is West Virginia's 18th largest county. Hancock was created from Brooke County in 1848 and named for John Hancock, first signer of the Declaration of Independence.
