Located 35 miles west of Pittsburgh, Pa., Hancock County is the northern-most county in West Virginia. Though its 88.55 square miles ranks it as the smallest county in the state, Hancock County is one of West Virginia's most populated regions. With a population of 35,233, Hancock is West Virginia's 18th largest county. Hancock was created from Brooke County in 1848 and named for John Hancock, first signer of the Declaration of Independence. Hancock County's leading industries include iron, steel, chinaware, pottery, brick and fire clay, sheet metal, and tin products. The leading agricultural industries are forage and livestock.

Our office provides many local educational programs to area families, businesses, and communities. We are also your link to other WVU Extension offices and to West Virginia University colleges and offices. WVU's Hancock County Extension Office is part of the national land-grant system. Each office has the same mission as its foundation: to help people put knowledge to work.
