“The Proof is in the Pudding”! Exploring the Results of the American Camp Association 's Youth Development Research

Barry A. Garst, Ph.D., Director of Research Application, American Camp Association

How do you explain the importance of the camp experience to members of your community? What data exists to support the idea that camp is a context for positive youth development and not just summer entertainment?

Over the past several years, the American Camp Association (ACA) has conducted several ground-breaking studies about youth camping. These studies provided revealing information about youth outcomes of the camp experience, supports and opportunities that lead to optimal camp experiences for youth, and strategies that camp directors can use to provide a high quality camp experience. The results of these studies were disseminated in a series of ACA publications titled Directions, Inspirations, and Innovations .

This session highlights the most critical findings from these studies, with an emphasis on program improvement. We will first explore how camp contributes to the positive development of youth and adolescents. Then we'll discuss how camps provide youth development environments for relationships, safety, youth involvement, and skill-building.
