Families and Health Programs

Cindy Fitch, a registered dietician with more than 30 years experience working with children and their families, can provide expert assistance on health and nutrition.

She is the director of WVU Extension’s Families and Health Programs. In that role, she works with Extension specialists and county agents to provide evidence-based educational programs in the areas of health, nutrition, financial literacy, family relations and human development across the state of West Virginia.

Cindy completed her bachelor’s degree in Home Economics at Texas Tech University and her master’s degree in nutrition at Texas Woman’s University.

She worked for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) in Lubbock, Texas during the earliest years of the program.

She spent several years working as a clinical dietician at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. Later, she moved from Dallas to Cleveland where she worked as a clinical dietician at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital.

In 1999, she completed her Ph.D. in nutrition at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and joined the human nutrition faculty at West Virginia University. In August of 2008, she moved to the WVU Extension Service as the Food and Nutrition Specialist. She was named director of the WVU Extension Service Families and Health program in December of 2009.

Prior to joining Extension, her research focus was on understanding the relationships among nutrition, growth, development, and health in children, and she has several publications in that area. In her role as the Food and Nutrition Specialist, Dr. Fitch is responsible for guiding the diabetes education programs, including Dining with Diabetes and the Diabetes Symposium and Workshop. She is a member of the American Dietetic Association, the American Society for Nutrition, and the American Diabetes Association.
