Family Nutrition Program

Discover how to live and feel better through the Wood County Family Nutrition Program (FNP). A community based nutrition education program, the FNP encourages limited resource consumers to choose and prepare healthy, safe, and affordable foods. People joining the FNP learn exciting ways to cook great-tasting, healthy meals. Katie Anderson, Nutrition Outreach Instructor, shares tips, recipes, menus, and foods to reinforce at home what is learned in class.

The FNP is funded through the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program and the Food Stamp Nutrition Education program. For more information on classes forming in your area contact Katie Anderson, Nutrition Outreach Instructor.

Dining with Diabetes

Diabetes is a common, serious, and costly disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that the rate of diabetes in West Virginia in 2002 was 10.2%. West Virginia is ranked second in prevalence among the 54 states and territories.

West Virginia is also ranked second in obesity and seventh in physical inactivity. These lifestyle measures combined with the fact that West Virginia has the oldest median age in the nation lead to an expected continued rise in both prevalence and incidence of diabetes.

Diabetes is called a lifestyle disease. Making changes in lifestyle can control diabetes and many of the complications of diabetes. The Dining with Diabetes program was designed to help individuals make these changes in lifestyle. Dining with Diabetes teaches how to prepare meals that are healthy and taste good. Participants will also have an opportunity to sample recipes, practice low-impact exercises and learn about various tests that are important for persons who have diabetes.

For information about upcoming classes, contact Leone Ohnoutka, Extension Educator.

Extension programs and activities offered by Wood County Extension are available to all persons without regard to race, color, sex, disability, religion, age, veteran status, political beliefs, sexual orientation, national origin, and marital or family status.

This material was funded, in part, by the USDA's Food Stamp Program. The Food Stamp Program provides nutrition assistance to people with limited income. To find out more, contact your local Food Stamp office.
